This was my favourite place in Canberra. I'm so glad we found it and went! Didn't get a chance to catch some live music; but the staff, the set up and vibe was great. Very old school Brunswick. There are two pianos on the premises that anyone can tinker on, as well as a wall & corner of heaps of other instruments. My mates and I spent the afternoon jamming, listening to others come and go, and learning how to play Carrom. Very chill.

I love Smith's. It's just great. Imagine your loungeroom as a cafe and all the best local talent keeps turning up to rock the place. Coffee is good, food is a bit basic but cheap and cheerful. Smith's is Canberra's culture at it's finest.Oh. And it's super queer friendly. Always a plus.

Nice hangout, variety of drinks on offer. I'm not cool enough to really be in the place, but they let me in for a concert, which was nice of them. Staff were very nice to regulars.

Smith's Alternative, is perhaps one of the very few alternative spaces left in Canberra. It has a lovely beatnik vibe, it's main function is to feature local and interstate musicians. The owners Nigel and Beth have been promoting bands for many years now, with a focus on folk music and acoustic instrumental bands. They are both musicians themselves and they know how to put on a gig. I love the atmosphere of Smith's. If you have an interest in the alternative culture going back to the 1990's: when the word 'alternative' meant "freer thinking" rather than " leather binding", then Smith's is the place to go. It is a slice of Canberra's soul. An echo from a time when Canberra wasn't just a Public service town, but a Uni town as well; when Uni was actually worth going too, and people studied in pursuit of refining their intellect, as apposed to chasing the dollar. Academics call our alternative culture 'counter culture', but you can't really label a thing and expect to understand it, you have to experience it. So, even if not going there for the music, it's a great place to hang out and relax.

Smiths is a place with a unique feel. Awesome vibe, great staff, great events. One of the best places in Canberra to read a book or meet new people.Fully licensed, great coffee and cakes and central to anywhere you'd want to eat dinner.
